Electric Bike Maintenance

It’s kind of common knowledge... when we own nice things, we take extra good care of them. After investing in the electric bike of your dreams, you’d be pretty wise to understand how to care for and maintain it. The good news is that it’s not hard at all. We’ve assembled our recommendations here to ensure your e-bikes stays in great condition.

1. Regular Cleaning

Frame and Components: Use a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap to clean the frame. Avoid high-pressure water jets – the last thing you want to do is damage electrical components. For stubborn dirt, a gentle brush can help.
Battery: Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to keep connections clean. Ensure it’s completely dry before recharging.

2. Tire Care

Checking Tire Pressure: Use a bicycle pump with a pressure gauge to keep tires at the recommended PSI. Properly inflated tires provide peak performance and safety.
Fixing a Flat Tire: Depending on your confidence level and bike mechanic skills, you can either fix a flat yourself or you can just as easily take your bike to a local authorized retailer for help.

3. Battery Maintenance

Charging: Charge your battery according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Avoid overcharging and ensure you use the correct charger.
Storage: Store the battery in a cool, dry place and try to not let it discharge completely.

4. General Checks

Bolts and Screws: Regularly check and tighten bolts and screws, especially around the handlebars, pedals, and frame.
Brake Adjustment: Ensure brakes are responsive and not worn out. Adjust or replace brake pads as needed. If this sounds intimidating, just contact your local bike shop for assistance.

1. Annual Tune-Up

Full Tune-Up: An annual tune-up is recommended to address wear and tear and ensure everything from the drivetrain to the suspension is functioning correctly.
Software Updates: Electric bikes often have software that requires updates for optimal performance. A bike shop can handle these updates, no problem.

2. Battery Care

Deep Cleaning: Professionals can perform a deeper cleaning of battery connections and ensure there’s no corrosion.
Capacity Check: Mechanics can test the battery’s capacity and health to ensure it’s performing optimally.

3. Wheel and Tire Services

Professional Tire Service: For complex issues or if you're uncomfortable handling tire repairs, a bike shop can provide expert service, including installing new tires or tubes.
Wheel Alignment: Have your wheels checked for proper alignment and truing, which can impact ride quality and safety.

4. Electrical System Check

Diagnostic Testing: Professionals can run diagnostic tests on your e-bike’s electrical system to identify any issues with wiring or the motor.
Component Replacement: If any electrical components need replacement, a bike shop can ensure the right parts are used and installed correctly.

5. Touch-Up Paint

Identify the Area: Clean the area needing touch-up to remove dirt and grime.
Apply Touch-Up Paint: We offer a range of touch up paint colors that are available at your local Electra retailer. If you happen to have an e-bike whose frame color isn’t supported by our touch up paint offering, consider finding a nail polish that’s a close match. Yes, nail polish.

By following these maintenance practices, you’ll ensure that your electric bike remains reliable and enjoyable to ride. Regular at-home care combined with periodic professional maintenance will keep your e-bike in prime condition for years to come.
